Regulated Box Mods

A regulated box mod contains an internal chipset that controls the power delivered to your coil. You set the wattage using the buttons on the device, and the chip manages the output consistently, regardless of battery charge level. It also monitors for faults and cuts power if something goes wrong. That's the core difference between a regulated mod and a mechanical mod - there's active circuitry between the battery and the coil, not just a direct connection.

A regulated mod uses a chipset to manage and protect the firing process. A mechanical vape mod has no such protection - it's a direct electrical circuit between battery and coil. Mechanical mods can deliver excellent performance, but they require a solid understanding of Ohm's law and battery safety. Yes, with the right expectations. A regulated mod with a built-in battery and a simple variable wattage system is not significantly harder to use than a pod kit. It depends on the mod. Built-in battery mods charge via USB-C and need nothing extra. External battery mods, whether single or dual cell, require you to buy batteries separately. Coil life varies based on wattage, e-liquid, and how heavily you vape. At moderate wattages (50-80W) with a quality mesh coil and a 70/30 VG/PG e-liquid, you'd typically get 10-14 days from a coil before flavour starts to drop. Push the wattage higher or use very sweet e-liquids and that can shorten to 7-10 days. Start with the wattage range printed on the coil itself - most coils have a recommended range stamped on the side or packaging. Begin at the lower end and work up until the flavour hits the sweet spot. For MTL vaping you're typically in the 10-25W range. Almost certainly yes. The vast majority of vape tanks use a 510 connection, and all regulated box mods in our range feature a 510 connector as standard. If you've been using a pod kit with proprietary pods, those won't transfer - but any standard tank with a 510 thread will fit. Check the tank's thread type if you're unsure.

A single battery mod is more compact and suits vapers running up to around 80-100W. Dual battery mods offer more total capacity, which means longer use between charges and the ability to sustain higher wattages more reliably over time. If you vape heavily throughout the day or regularly run at 80W and above, a dual battery setup is worth the extra bulk. For moderate daily use, a single 21700 cell mod is usually more than adequate.

The main ongoing costs are coils and e-liquid. At around £3-5 per replacement coil and 1-2 coils per fortnight, coils alone work out to roughly £6-20 per month for most vapers. E-liquid costs vary, but a 100ml shortfill typically lasts a moderate sub-ohm vaper around a week, costing £8-12 depending on the brand. Total running costs for a regulated mod setup generally come in well below what a disposable-heavy habit used to cost. It's one of the main reasons vapers make the switch.

For most vapers, yes. A regulated mod paired with a quality sub-ohm tank and a high-VG e-liquid will typically outperform a pod kit on both flavour intensity and vapour production. The larger coil surface area in a sub-ohm tank, combined with adjustable airflow and wattage control, gives you more to work with. That said, a premium pod mod running low-resistance mesh pods can come close for some e-liquid types, particularly nic salts. If flavour is your priority and you don't mind a bigger device, a regulated mod wins.

It depends on your setup. For DTL sub-ohm vaping, high-VG e-liquids and shortfills at 70VG/30PG or higher work best - they produce better clouds and are kinder to low-resistance coils. For MTL setups using higher-resistance coils, 50/50 blends or nic salts are more appropriate, giving a smoother throat hit at lower wattages.
