Vape Batteries Overview & Specifications

Why Choose Vape Batteries

Why Choose Removable Vape Batteries?

Using a removable battery mod gives you a level of flexibility that built-in devices simply cannot match. Here is what makes external vape batteries worth the investment:

  • Carry a spare charged cell and swap it in seconds, no waiting around for the device to recharge
  • Replace just the battery when capacity drops, rather than replacing the whole device
  • Match your cell to your vaping style, whether that is a high-capacity 21700 for all-day use or a high-drain 18650 for sub-ohm builds
  • Compatible with a wide range of vape mods from leading manufacturers
  • More cost-effective long-term compared to disposable or sealed-battery devices
  • Works with a dedicated external charger for better charge cycles and longer cell lifespan
  • Full control over your power source rather than depending on a built-in charge port

Removable rechargeable vape batteries give serious vapers the flexibility, performance and control that built-in cells cannot.

Types of Vape Batteries Available

Types of Vape Batteries Available

Our range covers the main cell sizes used in vape mods, so whether you are running a compact single-battery setup or a high-wattage dual-battery device, you will find the right fit here.

  • 18650 batteries – the most widely used size in vape mods, suitable for single and dual-battery devices at low to mid wattage
  • 21700 batteries – physically larger cells with higher capacity and often higher CDR, suited to powerful single or dual-battery mods
  • 20700 batteries – a middle-ground size used in some older or specialist mod formats
  • High-drain cells rated for sub-ohm builds running below 0.5 ohm
  • High-capacity cells prioritising long battery life over maximum current output
  • Cells from specialist battery brands with verified, independently-tested specs, including Vapcell, whose cells are prized for consistent, real-world capacity and discharge figures

Not sure which size fits your device? We have broken down the differences in our 18650 vs 21700 vs 20700 guide.

Shop Vape Batteries at Legion of Vapers

We stock vape batteries because we use them. Fogstar, Vapcell and Molicel are the brands we trust in our own mods, and the Molicel P42A in particular is one of the most widely respected 21700 cells among independent battery testers. That is the standard we hold our stock to.

Browse the full range of 18650 and 21700 batteries, pick up a compatible battery charger to go with your cells, and take 5% off your first order when you sign up. Free UK delivery applies on orders over £40. If you want to go deeper on safe use and handling, our vape battery safety guide covers everything from wrap checks to storage and disposal.

What Are Married Batteries?

If you run a dual-battery mod, your two cells should be treated as a matched pair rather than two separate batteries. This is often called marrying your batteries, and it matters for both performance and safety. Always use the same pair together in the same mod, charge them together on the same charger cycle, and rotate them together as they age rather than treating one as a spare. Never mix an old, worn cell with a new one, since mismatched capacity or discharge can cause one battery to work harder than the other. Keeping cells married is essential for dual-battery devices, helping them wear evenly and reducing the risk of imbalance-related issues.

Vape Batteries FAQs

Explore our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What size battery does my vape mod take?

It depends on your mod. Most single-battery mods take an 18650, but many newer high-wattage mods are built for 21700 cells. Check your mod’s user manual or the manufacturer spec sheet. Some mods accept both sizes with an adapter. If you are unsure, our 18650 vs 21700 vs 20700 guide explains the differences clearly.

What does mAh mean on a vape battery?

mAh stands for milliamp-hour and indicates how much charge a battery holds. A higher mAh rating means longer use between charges. A 3000mAh cell will last noticeably longer than a 2500mAh cell in the same device, all else being equal. That said, mAh alone does not tell the full story.

What is CDR and why does it matter for vaping?

CDR stands for continuous discharge rating and tells you the maximum current a battery can deliver safely on a sustained basis. For sub-ohm vaping, this matters a lot. Running a battery beyond its CDR causes it to overheat, which is both a performance and safety issue. If you are vaping at 60W or above, prioritise CDR alongside capacity when choosing a cell. Our sub-ohm vaping guide covers this in more detail.

What is the difference between 18650 and 21700 vape batteries?

21700 cells are physically larger than 18650s and typically offer higher capacity and better CDR. They suit high-wattage mods designed to take them. 18650 cells are smaller, more widely compatible and still more than adequate for most vaping setups. The right choice depends on your mod’s battery slot, not just what sounds more powerful.

How long does a vape battery last before it needs replacing?

Most quality lithium-ion cells hold up well for 300 to 500 charge cycles before capacity starts to drop noticeably. How long that takes in real terms depends on how often you vape and how you charge. Using a dedicated charger rather than charging through the device’s USB port helps extend cell life. Once a battery is noticeably running out faster than it used to, it is time to replace it.

How do I know if my vape battery wrap is damaged?

Look for nicks, tears, peeling at the edges or any area where the coloured plastic sleeve has pulled away from the cell. Even a small tear near the positive or negative terminal is a problem. A damaged wrap can allow the cell to short-circuit if it contacts metal inside the mod. If you spot any damage, stop using the battery. Most local vape shops can rewrap a cell, or you can replace it entirely.

Is it safe to use any 18650 battery in a vape mod?

No. Not all 18650 batteries are suitable for vaping. A cell rated for torch use or low-drain electronics may not be able to safely deliver the current a vape mod demands. Always use batteries from reputable brands with verified CDR ratings. Avoid anything with suspiciously high specs from unknown sources, because rewrapped or counterfeit cells with inflated ratings are a genuine risk.

How can I tell if a vape battery is a genuine cell or a rewrap?

The simplest check is to cross-reference the battery’s claimed specs against independent test data. Battery tester Mooch is the most widely cited source in the vaping community, and his results are freely available online. If a battery claims a 40A CDR but no credible test confirms anything close to that, treat it with caution. Buying from established brands like Molicel, Vapcell and Fogstar through a reputable retailer removes most of this risk entirely.

How should I store spare vape batteries safely?

Always store loose cells in a dedicated battery case, never loose in a pocket, bag or drawer where they can contact keys, coins or other metal objects. Keep them away from direct heat, moisture and sunlight. A cool, dry place is ideal. Do not stack cells without protection between them.

Do I need a separate charger for removable vape batteries?

A dedicated battery charger is the better option for most vapers. Charging through your mod’s USB port works in a pinch, but a quality external charger gives you better control over charge rate, lets you charge multiple cells simultaneously and is generally gentler on the cells over time. If you are buying removable batteries for the first time, a charger should be on your shopping list too.

Can I charge vape batteries through the device’s USB port?

Yes, most mods with removable batteries do support USB charging. It is convenient but not ideal for long-term cell health. USB charging through the device is slower, less regulated and harder on the battery than a dedicated charger. Use it when you need to, but for regular charging, a proper battery charger is the better habit.

How should I dispose of old or damaged vape batteries?

Do not put lithium-ion cells in household waste or recycling bins. Most supermarkets, electronics retailers and council recycling centres have dedicated battery collection points. Many vape shops will also take old cells. Disposing of them correctly keeps hazardous materials out of landfill and is a legal requirement under UK waste regulations.
