Mechanical vape mods are unregulated devices that deliver raw, unfiltered power directly from battery to atomiser, with no circuit board sitting between them. That means no wattage limits, no safety cutoffs and no restrictions on how you build and run your coil. You get full control over your vaping experience, from the resistance of your build to the battery cell you choose. Our range covers tube mech mods and mechanical box mods from brands including Thunderhead Creations, Timesvape and Vaperz Cloud, with options to suit different build styles and preferences. Grab 5% off your first order when you sign up, plus free delivery on all UK orders over £40. For experienced builders who know their Ohm’s law and understand battery safety, a mech mod is as close to a pure vaping experience as it gets.

Mech mods are not a one-size-fits-all category. There are meaningful differences in form factor, battery configuration and intended use that affect how each device vapes day to day.
Leading brands in our range produce unregulated vape mods across these categories, with builds ranging from entry-level mech setups to precision-machined collector-grade devices.
Mech mods are built for experienced vapers who already understand sub-ohm building, Ohm’s law and battery safety. If you know how to calculate current draw, check your coil resistance before firing and select the right battery cell for your build, a mech mod gives you a level of control that no regulated device can. They suit vapers who want to push their builds without software getting in the way, and who enjoy the process of dialling in a setup from scratch. They are not recommended for beginners or anyone who is not confident working with battery safety and coil resistance. For the right vaper, a mech mod is a genuinely satisfying piece of kit that rewards the knowledge you put into using it correctly.
Here are the key features that make mechanical vape mods a popular choice among experienced builders:
The combination of raw performance, simple construction and complete build freedom is what keeps experienced vapers coming back to unregulated mech mods.
We stock mechanical mods from brands we have actually handled and tested, including Thunderhead Creations, Timesvape and Vaperz Cloud. Thunderhead Creations builds mech mods with a precision finish and firing consistency that makes them a go-to for experienced builders who want reliability alongside performance. Timesvape offers well-priced unregulated options that punch above their cost, particularly for vapers putting together a first mech setup. Vaperz Cloud is stocked here as an authorised stockist, which matters in a category where counterfeits are a real and genuine concern. Buy from us and you know you are getting the real thing.
Pair your mech mod with quality vape batteries rated for your build, a trusted battery charger and the right RDA for your coil style. We carry coil wire and vape cotton too, so you can get everything sorted in one order. Free UK delivery on orders over £40, and 5% off when you sign up to our newsletter. A mechanical mod is an unregulated vaping device with no circuit board. Pressing the firing button completes the circuit directly between your battery and your atomiser, passing current straight through to your coil. There is no wattage control, no temperature limiting and no short-circuit protection built in. The output voltage depends on your battery’s charge level, dropping gradually as the cell drains.
They can be used safely, but safety is entirely the user’s responsibility. Without built-in protections, you need to understand Ohm’s law, check coil resistance before firing, use a battery cell with an appropriate continuous discharge rating (CDR) for your build, and inspect your atomiser and 510 connection regularly. Mistakes that a regulated mod would catch automatically become the vaper’s own problem on a mech. Read our vape battery safety guide before you start.
It depends on your battery’s CDR. As a worked example: a fully charged 18650 cell sits at around 4.2V. If your coil build is 0.15 ohm, the current draw is 4.2 divided by 0.15, which equals 28 amps. Your battery needs a CDR above that figure to fire safely. Most experienced mech builders keep resistance between 0.10 and 0.20 ohm on a single-cell tube mod, but always calculate first. Our guide to Ohm’s law walks through the maths in full.
Use high-drain cells from reputable brands with a clearly rated CDR that exceeds the current your build will draw. Brands stocked at Legion of Vapers include Molicel, Sony, Golisi, Fogstar, Vapcell and Efest. Avoid rewrapped or unbranded cells – the CDR ratings on cheap batteries are frequently inflated and unreliable. Check our 18650 vs 21700 batteries guide if you are deciding between cell sizes.
Tube mech mods are cylindrical and typically run a single battery cell. They are compact, easy to carry and simple to use. Box-style mechanical mods have a squarer form factor and often accommodate dual batteries, which gives more runtime and slightly more stable voltage output over longer sessions. Tube mods tend to suit tighter single-coil builds, while box mech mods give more flexibility for dual-coil RDA setups with lower overall resistance.
RDAs (rebuildable dripping atomisers) are the most common pairing for mech mods. They are simple, have minimal airflow restriction and let you control your coil build entirely. If you are using a hybrid mech mod with a direct 510 connection, check that your RDA’s centre pin protrudes correctly. A flush or recessed pin on a hybrid connection is a genuine safety hazard. For more on atomiser types, see our RDA, RTA and RDTA tanks explained guide.
Thermal runaway happens when a battery cell is pushed beyond its safe limits, overheats and enters an uncontrollable discharge cycle. On a mech mod, the absence of overcharge protection and short-circuit cutoffs means a shorted coil or a cell pushed past its CDR can trigger this. Avoid it by always checking coil resistance before firing, never using a battery with a CDR below your calculated current draw, inspecting wraps for damage before every use and not leaving a battery in a mech mod when it is stored. Our vape battery safety guide covers this in detail.
Yes, and regular maintenance is part of responsible mech mod use. Clean the battery contacts and threading periodically to prevent resistance buildup, which reduces power delivery and can cause inconsistent firing. Check your 510 connection for tightness, inspect battery wraps for nicks or tears before every use, and rebuild your coil when cotton starts to darken or flavour drops off. Mech mods have fewer parts than regulated devices, which makes maintenance straightforward once you know the routine.
Regulated box mods use a circuit board to control power output, enforce safety cutoffs and let you set wattage or temperature via a screen and buttons. Mech mods have none of that. The output on a mech is determined entirely by your battery voltage and coil resistance, and there are no electronic protections. Regulated mods suit most vapers because they are consistent and forgiving. Mech mods suit experienced builders who want to work without those limits and take full responsibility for their own safety.
No. Ohm’s law is the foundation of safe mech mod use. Without it, you cannot calculate current draw, verify your build is within your battery’s CDR or understand what voltage your coil is actually receiving. If you are not comfortable with the maths, a mech mod is not the right device yet. Start with our guide to Ohm’s law and our guide to sub-ohm vaping before committing to an unregulated device.
The three brands we stock and stand behind are Thunderhead Creations, Timesvape and Vaperz Cloud. Thunderhead Creations is respected for its machining quality and firing consistency. Timesvape makes well-built mech mods at more accessible prices. Vaperz Cloud is stocked here as an authorised retailer, which is important in a market where fakes do circulate. Buying from an authorised UK stockist is the simplest way to avoid counterfeit products.
Before you fire any mech mod for the first time, run through this checklist: confirm your coil resistance with an ohm reader, calculate your current draw and verify it is within your battery’s CDR, check the 510 connection is secure and the centre pin is making contact correctly, inspect your battery wrap for damage, confirm there are no shorts in your build, and make sure you are using fresh, undamaged cotton. Our how to build vape coils guide covers the building process step by step.
