Mechanical mods (and semi-mechanical mods) are high-quality e-cig mods that are unregulated. They do not come with the built-in safety features synonymous with most vape mods, particularly regulated box mods.
The power supplied by the device’s battery is unfiltered. When using this mod type, your atomiser will be fed directly without having to bypass any restrictive measures, such as short-circuit protection. As there are no restrictive measures, you’re free to customise your vaping experience as much as you please.
While mechanical mods are used by experienced vapers, they are relatively simple pieces of equipment. They only have a few parts and no internal electronic elements. Ohm’s Law describes the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance. The lower the resistance and the higher the voltage, the more e-liquid is vapourised and battery energy is drained. Understanding the relationship between Ohm’s law elements empowers you to use the correct coil and battery, ensuring safety.
Building a coil incorrectly or using a pre-built coil with the wrong resistance could lead to dangerously high currents. Coils with lower resistance draw more current, draining your battery life faster.
Since mechanical mods lack wattage regulation and short-circuit protection, coils with lower resistance are easily overpowered. Mech vape mods will allow high power output even if the coil is melted, the battery is overheated or thermal runaway happens.

A thermal runaway happens when your coil draws more power as it heats up. Hotter coils draw more power, resulting in higher temperatures. This results in a feedback loop that can quickly damage the battery, coil and other components.
Since mech mods don’t have safety features, they can short-circuit, overheat or trigger a thermal runaway. This can damage or rapidly destroy your battery and vape. They can also heat the coil to temperatures that could cause e-liquid components to break down, producing undesired substances.
To find the current I (in Ampere, A) going through your coil, divide the battery Voltage V (in Volt, V) by the coil resistance R (in Ohm, Ω). For instance, 4.2V / 0.5Ω = 8.4A.
