RDTAs Overview & Specifications

Why Choose RDTAs

Why Choose an RDTA Tank?

RDTAs aren’t the most mainstream option on the shelf, but for the right vaper, they offer something RTAs and RDAs can’t quite match on their own. Here’s why they’re worth considering:

  • Flavour that competes with RDAs. The open deck and short wicking path mean e-liquid hits the coil fast and stays fresh, giving you that sharp, direct flavour that closed systems often flatten out.
  • Better convenience than a straight RDA. A built-in tank means you’re not dripping every few minutes. The reservoir feeds the wick passively, so you can vape for longer between refills.
  • Full build control. You choose the wire, the coil type, the resistance, and the wicking. A single coil build at 0.3 ohms feels completely different to a dual coil mesh setup at 0.15 ohms, and with an RDTA you can swap between them.
  • Mesh and standard wire compatibility. Several models in our range, including the Wotofo Profile RDTA, support both mesh strips and traditional round wire, so you’re not locked into one style.
  • Low running costs. You’re buying coil wire and vape cotton, not pre-built replacement heads. Over time, this is significantly cheaper than swapping sub-ohm coils every week.
  • Reduced leakage vs a standard RDA. Because the e-liquid is stored below the deck in a sealed tank, you’re not fighting gravity every time you set the device down.
  • Squonk compatibility. Some RDTAs include a bottom-feed pin, meaning you can pair them with a squonk mod for even simpler e-liquid delivery.

For vapers who’ve already spent time with sub-ohm tanks and want to take the next step, an RDTA is a logical and rewarding upgrade.

Types of RDTAs Available

Types of RDTA Tanks Available

Our RDTA range covers several distinct build styles and formats, so there’s no single “default” setup. What works for a cloud-focused DTL vaper is different to what suits a flavour hunter running tight airflow.

  • Single coil RDTAs – lower running costs, simpler builds, and often more flavour-focused. A good entry point if you’re new to rebuildables.
  • Dual coil RDTAs – more vapour production and a denser hit. Better suited to vapers already comfortable building and wicking symmetrical setups.
  • Mesh-compatible RDTAs – mesh strips produce a wider, more even heat spread than round wire. Flavour is typically cleaner, and ramp-up time is faster.
  • Standard wire RDTAs – traditional builds using Kanthal, SS316L, or Ni80. More flexibility for advanced vapers who want to tune resistance precisely.
  • Bottom-feed (squonk-ready) RDTAs – designed to work with squeeze-bottle squonk mods, feeding e-liquid up through the pin rather than relying solely on tank capacity.
  • Postless and post-style deck options – postless decks make wire routing easier for beginners, while post-style decks suit vapers who prefer more familiar builds.

From leading brands including Steam Crave, Wotofo, and Hellvape, the options here span genuine beginner-accessible builds through to competition-grade setups.

Who Are RDTAs Best For?

Who Are RDTA Tanks Best For?

RDTAs are firmly in enthusiast territory. These aren’t beginner devices, and we won’t pretend otherwise. To get the most from an RDTA, you need to be comfortable building a coil, handling cotton, and understanding how wicking affects both dry hits and flooding. If you’re still getting to grips with the basics, it’s worth starting with a sub-ohm tank before moving here. That said, vapers who have already built on an RDA or RTA will find RDTAs straightforward. They suit DTL vapers focused on flavour or cloud production, vapers who want to stop buying pre-built coils, and anyone who’s been frustrated by the constant dripping of a standard RDA. If you want full control without constant maintenance, the RDTA format delivers.

Key Features of RDTAs

Key Features of RDTA Tanks

Here are the key features that make RDTA tanks a strong choice for experienced vapers:

  • Open deck builds for full coil customisation, from simple single-wire setups to complex dual-coil configurations
  • Integrated e-liquid tank below the deck, feeding the wick via capillary action to reduce the need for constant dripping
  • Mesh and round wire compatibility across key models, giving vapers the flexibility to experiment with both styles
  • Adjustable airflow on most models, allowing you to dial between a tighter restricted DTL draw and a wider, airier hit
  • Low resistance capability for sub-ohm builds, typically ranging from 0.1 ohms upwards depending on the deck design
  • 510 threading as standard, compatible with the vast majority of regulated and mechanical mods
  • High VG e-liquid compatibility – the wider wick channels handle thick 70/30 and 80/20 high VG juice without starving the coil
  • Durable materials across Steam Crave, Wotofo, and Hellvape builds, including stainless steel and Ultem components

The combination of tank convenience and RDA-level flavour is what keeps this format relevant for serious vapers.

RDTAs FAQs

Explore our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What is an RDTA and how does it differ from an RDA or RTA?

An RDTA (Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomiser) sits between an RDA and an RTA in terms of format. It has an open build deck like an RDA, which is where you install and fire your coils, but it also has a sealed e-liquid tank beneath the deck that feeds the wick passively. An RDA has no tank and requires regular manual dripping. An RTA has a tank and a closed deck. The RDTA gives you the flavour and build freedom of an RDA with the reservoir convenience of an RTA.

Are RDTAs suitable for beginners?

Not really. RDTAs require you to build and install your own coils, wick them correctly, and understand how resistance and wattage interact. If you’re new to vaping, a pod kit or sub-ohm tank is a better starting point. If you’ve already built coils on an RDA or RTA and want to try a hybrid format, you’ll find the learning curve manageable.

How do you wick an RDTA to avoid dry hits?

This is the part most vapers get wrong early on. Cut your cotton so the tails reach the bottom of the wick channels without being compressed. Too little cotton and e-liquid floods the deck. Too much and it starves the coil. After seating the tails, saturate the wick before your first fire, then take a few short, gentle pulls before a full draw. We have a full guide on avoiding dry hits if you want more detail.

What VG/PG ratio works best in an RDTA?

High VG ratios, typically 70/30 VG/PG or above, work well in most RDTAs because the wider wick channels can handle thicker juice. Thinner 50/50 liquids will also work but may feel overly saturated on some builds. For best results with a mesh build, stick to high VG e-liquid to get the most from the coil surface area.

Can you use an RDTA on a squonk mod?

Some RDTAs include a BF (bottom-feed) pin that allows squonk compatibility. With this setup, squeezing the bottle pushes e-liquid up through the 510 pin directly to the deck, which is a cleaner and faster way to keep the wick saturated. Check the specific product listing to confirm BF pin compatibility. Our squonk mod guide covers compatible hardware in more detail.

How long does an RDTA coil last?

A well-maintained hand-built coil can last two to four weeks, sometimes longer. Coil life depends on the wire type, how often you vape, and the e-liquid you’re using. Sweet or dessert flavours tend to gunk up coils faster than unflavoured or menthol liquids. Dry burning and re-wicking can extend the life of a coil significantly. For more detail on coil longevity, see our guide on how long vape coils last.

Do RDTAs leak?

They can if the wicking is incorrect. If the cotton tails are too thin or too short, e-liquid drains out of the tank and floods the deck. Correct wicking seals the tank naturally, so the liquid is drawn up to the coil steadily rather than all at once. Keeping the device upright when not in use also helps. Most leakage issues with RDTAs are wicking problems, not hardware faults.

What wattage should I run an RDTA at?

It depends on your build. A single coil Kanthal build at 0.4 ohms typically runs well between 25 and 40 watts. A dual coil SS316L build at 0.15 ohms might need 60 to 80 watts for a good vape. Mesh builds generally need a wider surface area to fire evenly, often in the 40 to 60 watt range for a single strip. Start low, fire in short pulses, and increase wattage until the vapour production and flavour feel right for your build.

Is the Wotofo Profile RDTA good for mesh builds?

Yes. The Profile RDTA is one of the most well-regarded mesh RDTAs available and was specifically designed around mesh strip performance. The deck clamps the mesh strip in place and the wicking design is optimised for even saturation across the full strip width. It also supports traditional round wire builds if you want to switch between the two. See our notes on mesh vs regular coils for a direct comparison.

What mod do I need to use an RDTA?

Any regulated mod with a 510 connector and enough wattage to cover your build will work. For most single coil builds, a mod capable of 40 to 60 watts is more than enough. Dual coil builds may need 80 to 100 watts depending on resistance. Avoid very low-powered devices designed for pod use. A single 18650 or 21700 mod is the practical choice for most RDTA setups.

How do I build a coil for an RDTA?

The process is the same as building for any rebuildable. You’ll need coil wire, vape cotton, coil-building tools, and an ohm reader. Wrap the wire around a coil rod to your target diameter, trim and seat the legs in the deck posts, then check resistance before firing. Our full coil building guide walks through the process step by step. If you’re not ready to wrap your own, pre-built coils are a good way to skip that part while still running a rebuildable setup.

What’s the best RDTA for flavour in the UK?

The honest answer is that it depends on your build. Tight single coil setups with restricted airflow tend to produce the sharpest, most concentrated flavour. The Wotofo Profile RDTA in mesh configuration consistently produces excellent flavour across a wide range of e-liquids. Steam Crave models are well-regarded for precise airflow control. If flavour is your priority over cloud volume, a single coil build with a narrower bore chimney will get you closer to RDA-level performance than a large dual coil setup.

Why choose an RDTA instead of a standard sub-ohm tank?

A sub-ohm tank uses pre-built replacement coils, which are simple and convenient but cost more over time and offer no control over the build. An RDTA lets you hand-build your own coil, choosing the wire, resistance, and wicking exactly how you want it, while still benefiting from a proper tank instead of constant dripping. Whether a rebuildable is worth it depends on how much you value control and running costs versus convenience; if you’re happy to learn wicking and coil building, the savings and flavour gains add up quickly. A mesh RDTA build typically offers cleaner flavour and faster ramp-up than stock coils, though standard wire builds still give more precise control over resistance for experienced users.
