Most RDAs support both configurations. The right choice depends on what you’re after.
Single coil builds are easier to set up, run at lower wattage (typically 30-60W for a 0.3-0.5 ohm build), and are kinder on your batteries. Flavour is excellent, often better than dual coil in the right atty, because the coil sits closer to the airflow without competing with a second one. This is where most people start, and many experienced builders never leave.
Dual coil builds double the surface area, which means more vapour and more heat. You’ll typically run 60-120W or higher depending on your resistance, which draws more battery capacity and means shorter sessions between charges. Cloud output is noticeably bigger. The trade-off is a more demanding build process and faster battery drain.
For everyday use, a single coil build on a well-designed deck gives you excellent flavour without the power overhead. If you’re cloud-chasing or vaping at high wattage is your thing, dual coil is the obvious route – but make sure your mod and batteries can handle the load safely.

Buying an RDA is only part of the equation. You’ll need a few other things before your first build.
A regulated box mod. If you’re new to building, a regulated mod is the only sensible starting point. It has built-in safety protections – short circuit cutoffs, over-discharge protection, and wattage limits – that a mechanical mod does not. Browse our vape mods range if you need one.

Wire. 26AWG Kanthal A1 is the standard starting point. It’s easy to work with, holds its shape well, and is forgiving while you’re learning wrap counts. Other options include stainless steel and nichrome, but Kanthal is where most builders begin.
Organic cotton. Japanese unbleached cotton and Cotton Bacon are both reliable choices. You want something that wicks quickly without tasting of anything.
Basic tools. A coil jig or small screwdriver for wrapping, flush cutters for trimming leads, and a pair of ceramic tweezers for squeezing the coil while dry firing to remove hot spots. That’s genuinely all you need to start.

Flavour chasers often move to Ni80 or fused clapton coils for a fuller, more rounded flavour profile. If you’re running temperature control, SS316L is the standard option since it works in both wattage and TC modes. Mesh and complex builds – such as clapton, alien or framed staple coils – increase surface area and can boost flavour and vapour further, though they take more skill to wick evenly.
