This is the question that tips most experienced vapers into building their own coils. The short version: it’s significantly cheaper than buying pre-built replacements, once you factor in how many builds you get from a single spool.
A typical 10 metre spool of 26g Ni80 round wire gives you roughly 15 to 20 single-coil builds depending on your coil diameter and wrap count. Spools at this length are available from around £3 to £5 at Legion of Vapers. That works out to somewhere between 15p and 33p per coil build.
Compare that to pre-built coils, which typically cost £1.50 to £3.50 per coil depending on the brand and compatibility. Even accounting for vape cotton costs (a pack of Japanese organic cotton usually covers dozens of re-wicks), the savings are substantial over time.

Kanthal is the most beginner-friendly coil wire available, and there’s a good reason most builders start here. It’s stiff enough to hold its shape when you’re wrapping a coil, which makes it much easier to work with than softer materials. It also has a wide range of compatible gauges, so you can experiment without committing to a specific build style.
The trade-off is ramp-up time. Kanthal heats more slowly than Ni80 or stainless steel at equivalent gauges, which means a slightly less instant response when you fire your mod. For most vapers, this isn’t a deal-breaker, especially at the learning stage. Common gauges for single-coil builds range from 24g to 28g, with 26g being a reliable starting point for a sub-ohm RDA build.

Nichrome wire is the natural step up from Kanthal for wattage-mode builders. It ramps up noticeably faster, which gives a more responsive feel when you fire, and most builders find it produces cleaner, more pronounced flavour than Kanthal at the same resistance.
Ni80 (80% nickel, 20% chromium) is the most common variety and works well across a wide gauge range. Ni90 runs slightly hotter and a little faster again, but the difference between the two is subtle in practice. Both are popular choices for single and dual-coil RDA builds.

SS316L is the most versatile wire on this list. It works in both wattage mode and temperature control mode, which makes it the go-to choice for builders who want one wire to cover multiple setups or mods.
Ramp-up time is faster than Kanthal and broadly comparable to Ni80 in most builds. Flavour is clean and neutral, which suits vapers who don’t want the wire itself affecting how their e-liquid tastes. It’s also harder than Ni80, which means it holds its coil shape well and is a good option if you’re bending more complex configurations.
One note on dry burns: keep the wattage low when dry-burning SS316L coils to clean them. High-wattage dry burns can cause the wire to discolour heavily and potentially affect coil performance. Nickel allergy warning: SS316L contains a small amount of nickel. Vapers with nickel sensitivities should check material composition before use.
Ni200 is a temperature control-only wire. Do not use it in wattage mode. The resistance is so low at operating temperatures that firing it in wattage mode without proper TC protection can result in a runaway heating situation, and the wire itself can get damaged very quickly.
In TC mode with a compatible mod, Ni200 provides excellent temperature consistency. It’s very soft and malleable compared to other wire types, which makes it trickier to wrap cleanly, especially on tight dual-post decks. Most builders who start with Ni200 find SS316L easier to handle for TC builds while delivering similar temperature stability.
Nickel allergy warning: Ni200 is almost pure nickel. Anyone with any nickel sensitivity should not use this wire.
Titanium wire is a TC-only option that has largely been overtaken by SS316L in everyday use. It’s lightweight and corrosion resistant, but handling it requires a reliable TC mod and good temperature awareness. At temperatures above 648°C, titanium oxide can form on the wire surface, which is why it’s firmly in the experienced-builders-only category. If your TC mod is well-calibrated and you know your setup, titanium wire performs well. If you’re not confident in your mod’s TC accuracy, stick with SS316L.
Round wire is the standard format for coil building, and it’s where every builder should start. It’s easy to source, straightforward to wrap and compatible with every rebuildable setup from a simple single-coil RDA to a tight-deck RTA. All of the wire types above are available in round format.
A single round wire coil is also the easiest to troubleshoot. If something isn’t right with your build, there are fewer variables to account for than with more complex formats.
Flat and ribbon wire have a rectangular cross-section rather than a circular one. That wider profile increases the surface area in contact with your wick, which generally translates to better flavour – more of the coil surface is heating your e-liquid evenly.
In an open-deck RDA, flat wire is relatively easy to work with. On a tighter RTA deck, it can be frustrating to wrap neatly without kinking. Vandy Vape flat wire in particular wicks more evenly in snug RTA builds than some round wire of equivalent gauge, but you do need to take your time with the wraps. If you’re building for an RTA, practise the coil shape on a mandrel before installing it.
Fused Clapton wire wraps one or more thinner wires tightly around a core strand (or strands), creating a textured surface that dramatically increases the surface area compared to a simple round wire at the same gauge.
The result is more intense flavour and denser vapour production. The trade-off is slower ramp-up time, because there’s more wire mass to heat. Complex builds like Claptons also require more wicking care than round wire coils – if the wick doesn’t sit right in all those outer wraps, you’ll get dry hits.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but ribbon wire is typically thinner in cross-section while flat wire is slightly wider and more square in profile. Both offer more surface area than round wire. If your deck is tight, ribbon wire is often easier to work with. Flat wire gives a marginal surface area advantage in more open decks.
