Vape Cotton Overview & Specifications

Types of Vape Cotton Explained

Not all vape cotton looks or works the same. The format you choose should match your build style and your atomiser type. Using the wrong format is one of the most common mistakes people make when they first move to rebuildables.

Loose Cotton

Loose cotton comes in fluffy, uncompressed form. You tear off the amount you need and shape it yourself before threading it through the coil. It suits round wire builds well, including single and dual coil setups in RDAs and RTAs. Because you’re controlling the amount entirely, loose cotton rewards vapers who already have a feel for wicking. It’s the most flexible format but has the steepest learning curve if you’ve never wicked a coil before.

Pre-Rolled Cotton Strips

Pre-rolled strips are cut and rolled to a consistent size, ready to thread straight through the coil. There’s no tearing, no guessing how much to use and minimal prep time. For anyone new to rebuildables or rebuilding on the go, strips are the easier option. Brands like Wotofo produce pre-rolled strips designed to match common coil inner diameters, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of your first few builds.

Agleted Cotton Threads

Agleted cotton, sometimes called shoelace cotton, has a stiffened tip that makes threading it through a coil significantly easier. This format was largely developed alongside the rise of mesh coil RDAs. Mesh coils have a wider, flatter contact area that benefits from even saturation across the full surface, and agleted cotton threads through cleanly without bunching or tearing. If you’re running a Profile-style mesh RDA or similar, this is the format to reach for. Vapefly and Coilology both produce well-regarded options in this format.

Who Are Vape Cotton Best For?

How to Choose the Right Cotton for Your Build

The short answer: match your cotton format to your coil type.

For round wire builds, loose cotton or pre-rolled strips both work well. Loose cotton gives you more control over the density of the wick, which matters when you’re working with complex coils like claptons or aliens where the e-liquid needs to travel through more wire surface. Pre-rolled strips work fine for simpler round wire builds and are a good starting point if you’re still dialling in your technique.

For mesh coils, agleted or shoelace-style cotton is the practical choice. Mesh has a wider surface area than round wire and needs cotton that threads through evenly without compressing unevenly at one end. Bunched or uneven wicking across a mesh coil leads to hot spots and inconsistent flavour.

Japanese organic cotton is worth a specific mention. It’s tightly woven, pure and breaks in quickly. Many experienced vapers keep it around for flavour-focused builds where clarity matters above everything else. If you’re building on an RTA and want the cleanest possible taste from your e-liquid, Japanese organic cotton is a solid choice.

Key Features of Vape Cotton

Our Vape Cotton Range

We stock wicking material from the brands builders actually use. Each one has earned a place in the range for a practical reason.

  • Thunder Cloud cotton is a consistent performer we keep coming back to for everyday builds. It breaks in quickly and delivers clean flavour without a long priming period.
  • Vapefly produces the Firebolt cotton series, including agleted options that work particularly well in mesh RDAs. The threading is easy and the saturation is even across the wick.
  • Wotofo pre-rolled strips are a reliable choice for new rebuilders. Consistent sizing, minimal prep and they suit a wide range of coil inner diameters.
  • Cotton Bacon is a well-regarded name in the rebuildable community. Cotton Bacon Prime absorbs fast and holds up well under sustained wattage.

Most options come in resealable packs of ten or more, giving you enough material for multiple re-wicks. Browse the full range above and use the filters to narrow down by brand or format.

How Much Cotton to Use

Getting the amount right is where most wicking problems actually start. Too much and too little both cause issues, but they cause different ones.

Over-wicking happens when you’ve pushed too much cotton through the coil. The tails sit too tight in the juice channels, restricting e-liquid flow. The coil doesn’t saturate properly and you get dry hits, even though the tank or well is full. It can also put physical pressure on the coil legs, which affects resistance and can shorten coil life.

Under-wicking is the opposite. Not enough cotton means the coil floods. E-liquid floods into the chamber without being absorbed properly, leading to gurgling, spitting and leaking from the airflow or mouthpiece.

A useful guide for the right amount: after threading cotton through the coil, you should be able to pull the wick through with slight resistance, but not drag. The tails should be fluffy enough to sit lightly in the juice channels without compressing or blocking them. Trim them to length and fluff them out so they make full contact with the base of the well or the tank’s feed holes.

If you’re hitting dry hits straight after a fresh build, check the wick tails first. If you’re gurgling or getting spitback, the tails are likely too dense. Our guide to avoiding dry hits goes deeper on diagnosing the problem.

How Often Should You Re-Wick?

There’s no fixed schedule. How long your cotton lasts depends on how often you vape, what wattage you’re running and which e-liquid you’re using. Sweet, heavily flavoured juices gunk up cotton faster than simpler blends. Higher wattage builds burn through wicks quicker than lower-temperature setups.

That said, there are clear signs that your cotton needs replacing:

  • The cotton has turned dark brown or black, especially around the coil contact points
  • Flavour has gone muted or flat even on a clean, recently fired coil
  • There’s a persistent burnt undertone that doesn’t go away after a few puffs on a fresh prime
  • You can see visible residue or caramelised gunk in the cotton tails
  • Your previously consistent build has started producing dry hits without any obvious cause

Most regular rebuilders find they’re re-wicking every five to seven days with standard use, though heavy vapers running sweet flavours may need to re-wick more frequently. Dry burning the coil to clean off residue can extend the life of the wire, but the cotton should always be replaced fresh each time.

If you’re getting a burnt taste even with new cotton, the issue may be the coil rather than the wick. Our article on why your vape tastes burnt covers the full range of causes.

Vape Cotton FAQs

Explore our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What is vape cotton made from?

Vape cotton is made from organic, unbleached cotton. The cotton we stock is chlorine-free, pesticide-free and free from chemical additives. That purity matters because any residue in the wick will affect the flavour of your vape, particularly at higher temperatures.

How long does vape cotton last before you need to re-wick?

It depends on how often you vape and what e-liquid you’re using. Most regular rebuilders re-wick every five to seven days. Sweet or heavily flavoured juices tend to gunk up cotton faster and may require more frequent changes.

What is the difference between organic cotton and standard vape cotton?

Organic vape cotton is grown and processed without pesticides, bleaching agents or chemical treatments. Standard cotton may contain trace residues from processing. For vaping purposes, organic is the better choice because it burns cleaner and has less impact on flavour, especially in flavour-focused builds.

Does vape cotton affect flavour?

Yes, noticeably. Cotton quality has a direct effect on flavour clarity. Low-quality or chemically processed cotton can introduce an off-taste, particularly during the initial break-in period. Good organic cotton breaks in quickly and lets the e-liquid flavour come through without interference.

How do I know if I’ve used too much cotton in my coil?

If the wick tails are bunched tight in the juice channels and won’t sit loosely, you’ve got too much. Over-wicking restricts e-liquid flow and causes dry hits even when your tank or drip well is full. The cotton should thread through with light resistance and the tails should be fluffy, not compressed.

What type of cotton works best with mesh coils?

Agleted or shoelace-style cotton threads most cleanly through mesh coil setups. Mesh has a wider, flatter contact surface than round wire and needs even saturation across the whole area. Agleted cotton threads through without bunching, which helps avoid hot spots and uneven flavour.

Can I use regular cotton wool for vaping?

You can, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Regular cotton wool is typically bleached and may contain chemical residues that will affect the taste of your vape and are not intended for heating. Vape-specific organic cotton is processed to remove those additives and is designed to be used at vaping temperatures.

Why does my vape taste burnt even with new cotton?

A burnt taste after a fresh re-wick usually points to one of three things: the cotton wasn’t primed properly before firing, over-wicking is restricting juice flow, or the coil itself has residue or damage that needs addressing. Dry burn the coil carefully after stripping the old cotton before re-wicking. Our guide on burnt vape taste covers all the common causes.

What is Japanese organic cotton and is it better?

Japanese organic cotton is tightly woven, very pure and well known for fast break-in times and minimal impact on flavour. It’s a favourite for flavour-focused builds, particularly in RTAs. It’s not universally better than other organic cotton but it suits precision builds where flavour clarity is the priority.

How do I wick a coil correctly?

Thread the cotton through the coil inner diameter so it moves with slight resistance but doesn’t drag. Trim the tails to sit neatly in the juice channels or on the deck without folding back on themselves. Fluff them out so they make full contact with the e-liquid feed. Prime the cotton with a few drops of e-liquid before firing. Our full guide on how to build vape coils walks through the complete process step by step.

Are you a regulated UK vape retailer?

Yes. Legion of Vapers is a proud member of the IBVTA and operates in full compliance with UK vaping regulations. Every product we sell meets UK standards, and we’re committed to responsible retail across our full range of vape accessories.

Where can I find pre-built coils if I’m not ready to build my own?

If you’re not at the rebuildable stage yet, our pre-built coils range covers options for most popular tanks and pod systems. When you’re ready to make the jump to building your own, our coil wire range has everything you need to get started.
