RTA Tanks Overview & Specifications

Types of RTA Tanks Available

Types of RTA Tanks Available

Our RTA range covers a wide variety of formats and build styles, so there’s something whether you’re picking up your first rebuildable or you’ve been building for years.

  • Single coil RTAs – simpler build decks, easier to wick correctly, and a good starting point for anyone new to rebuildables
  • Dual coil RTAs – more surface area means more vapour and often more flavour, suited to experienced builders comfortable with higher wattage
  • MTL RTAs – tight airflow, higher resistance builds (typically 0.8 ohms and above), designed to replicate the draw of a cigarette or pod kit
  • DTL RTAs – open airflow, sub-ohm builds, built for direct lung inhales and bigger vapour production
  • Postless and velocity-style build decks – different deck designs to suit different coil types and builder preferences
  • Beginner-friendly RTAs – wider juice channels, forgiving wick ports and straightforward airflow make some tanks much easier to build on than others

Leading manufacturers like Hellvape, Vaperz Cloud, Dovpo and Thunderhead Creations all produce RTAs built to handle everything from everyday single coil builds to more demanding dual coil sub-ohm setups.

Common RTA Build Deck Styles

The deck style has a big impact on how easy an RTA is to build on and how it performs day to day. Here are the styles you’ll come across most often:

  • Velocity decks – wide posts with large clamps that make positioning and securing coils simple, a favourite for beginners and experienced builders alike
  • Postless decks – coil leads sit in a single clamp or channel rather than separate posts, giving more room to work but requiring a steadier hand
  • Clamp decks – similar to velocity but often more compact, using small clamping screws to hold coil legs firmly in place
  • GTA decks – genesis-style decks using mesh wicking rather than cotton, offering a different flavour and longevity profile to standard cotton builds

Who Are RTA Tanks Best For?

Who Are RTA Tanks Best For?

RTAs are aimed at vapers who already have some experience and want more from their setup. You don’t need to be an expert builder – a simple single coil RTA with a straightforward deck is well within reach for anyone who’s comfortable refilling a tank and replacing a coil head. That said, they’re not ideal as a first vape. If you’re still getting used to the basics, a standard tank or pod kit will serve you better while you find your feet. For vapers who’ve been at it a while, are tired of spending on replacement coils and want a setup they can actually tune, an RTA is where the real value starts.

Key Features of RTA Tanks

Key Features of RTA Tanks

Here are the key features that make rebuildable tank atomisers a popular choice for experienced vapers:

  • Rebuildable build deck – install your own coil wire (Kanthal, SS316L, nichrome) and organic cotton rather than relying on pre-built heads
  • E-liquid reservoir – the tank holds your e-liquid and feeds the wick automatically, so you’re not constantly dripping like you would be on an RDA
  • Adjustable airflow control – fine-tune draw resistance to suit MTL or DTL vaping
  • Chimney design – channels vapour from the build deck cleanly to the drip tip for consistent flavour and throat hit
  • Single or dual coil compatibility – most RTAs support at least one build style, with many offering both
  • Sub-ohm and high-resistance build support – choose your resistance based on your preferred wattage and vaping style
  • Durable construction – stainless steel chambers and glass tanks across most of the range, built to last
  • Broad e-liquid compatibility – works with high VG and 50/50 blends depending on your build and wick setup

The combination of a proper e-liquid tank and a fully customisable build deck is what makes RTAs the preferred format for vapers who want control without the constant maintenance of dripping.

Shop RTA Tanks at Legion of Vapers

We stock RTAs from brands we’ve actually used, not just listed. Hellvape, Vaperz Cloud, Dovpo and Thunderhead Creations between them cover everything from compact MTL tanks to full-size dual coil DTL setups, and we’ve got options to suit both first-time builders and seasoned rebuilders. Prices are competitive, and we’ll point you towards something that suits how you actually vape rather than whatever’s most expensive on the shelf. Orders over £40 qualify for free UK delivery, and you’ll get 5% off your first order.

Browse our full RTA tank range and find the rebuildable tank atomiser that fits your build style. If you want to stock up at the same time, check out our vape cotton and coil wire so you’re ready to build straight away.

Common RTA Mistakes

Most RTA problems trace back to a handful of recurring wicking and setup errors. Knowing them upfront saves a lot of trial and error:

  • Too much cotton – blocks the juice channels and causes gurgling or a starved wick
  • Too little cotton – allows liquid to bypass the wick, leading to leaking through the airflow
  • Coil too high – can catch the top cap or restrict airflow, affecting flavour and draw
  • Coil too low – sits too close to the juice channels, increasing the risk of flooding
  • Over-tightening the tank – can crack glass sections or strip threading over time
  • Incorrect wattage – firing above what your wire and wick can handle leads to dry hits and burnt cotton

RTA Tanks FAQs

Explore our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between an RTA and an RDA?

An RDA (rebuildable dripping atomiser) has no tank – you drip e-liquid directly onto the coil and wick every few puffs. An RTA has a built-in tank that feeds liquid to the wick automatically, so you get the customisation of a rebuildable with the convenience of a refillable tank. RDAs tend to offer more intense flavour, but RTAs win on practicality for everyday use. For a full breakdown, read our guide to RDA, RTA and RDTA explained.

Are RTAs good for beginners?

Honest answer: not as a first device, but don’t be put off. If you’ve been vaping for a while on a standard tank, a single coil RTA with a simple build deck is a realistic step up. The learning curve is short – most vapers get a decent build sorted within a couple of attempts. Start with a forgiving deck design, use organic cotton, and follow a straightforward guide. Our beginners guide to vape coils is a good place to start.

How long does a build last in an RTA?

A cotton wick typically lasts four to seven days depending on how much you vape and what e-liquid you’re using. High-sweetener liquids gunk up cotton faster and shorten that window. The coil wire itself lasts considerably longer – you’ll usually replace the cotton several times before you need to recoil. Getting a week out of a build that costs a few pence is one of the main reasons vapers make the switch.

What coil wire should I use in my RTA?

Kanthal A1 is the most common starting point – it’s easy to work with, stable in wattage mode and widely available. SS316L (stainless steel) works in both wattage and temperature control mode, which gives you an extra layer of protection against dry hits. Nichrome heats up faster than Kanthal and suits vapers who want a quicker ramp. Browse our full range of coil wire to find the right option for your build.

What is the best wicking material for an RTA?

Organic cotton is the standard for a reason – it’s clean tasting, absorbs well and is cheap enough to replace regularly without thinking twice about it. Avoid anything that hasn’t been treated specifically for vaping use. We stock a range of vape cotton formats including strips and pre-cut squares depending on your preference.

Can I use an RTA for mouth-to-lung vaping?

Yes. MTL RTAs are a proper category in their own right, built with narrow bore drip tips, restricted airflow and deck designs suited to higher resistance coils – typically 0.8 ohms and above. If you’re moving up from a pod kit or a standard MTL tank, a dedicated MTL RTA gives you the same draw style with the cost benefits of rebuilding. See our best MTL vape tanks guide for more detail.

Why is my RTA leaking?

The most common cause is incorrect wick placement in the juice channels. If the cotton tails are too thin, liquid bypasses the wick and leaks through the airflow. Too thick, and the juice channels get blocked, which causes gurgling rather than a clean leak. Getting the density right is the part that takes a couple of attempts. For more troubleshooting help, read our guide on how to fix a leaking vape tank.

How much does it cost to run an RTA compared to a standard tank?

A single replacement coil head typically costs between £3 and £5, and heavy vapers might go through one every three to five days. A spool of Kanthal wire runs to a few pounds and covers well over a hundred builds. A bag of organic cotton costs similar and lasts just as long. Weekly, you’re looking at pennies per build versus several pounds in coil heads. Over a month, that saving is significant, and it compounds quickly if you vape regularly.

What is the difference between an RTA and an RDTA?

An RDTA (rebuildable dripping tank atomiser) positions the build deck above the tank and uses wicks that hang down into the e-liquid below. RTAs have the tank surrounding the deck with liquid fed from the sides or base. RDTAs tend to suit vapers who want something between the intensity of an RDA and the convenience of an RTA. Our RDA, RTA and RDTA explained guide covers all three formats in full.

What’s the difference between a single coil and dual coil RTA?

A single coil RTA has one coil on the build deck. Easier to build, lower power draw and generally simpler to wick correctly. A dual coil RTA runs two coils simultaneously, which increases vapour production and can improve flavour but also draws more power and requires more precise wicking. Single coil setups are the better starting point for most builders. Dual coil RTAs are worth exploring once you’re confident in your technique.

How do I avoid dry hits on an RTA?

Dry hits on an RTA almost always come down to wicking. Too little cotton in the juice channels and the wick dries out between puffs, especially at higher wattages. Make sure your cotton tails sit comfortably in the juice channels without bunching – they should touch the base of the channel without being packed so tight that liquid can’t flow. Priming the wick with a few drops of e-liquid before your first fire also helps. More detail in our guide on how to avoid dry hits.

Do I need a specific mod to run an RTA?

Any regulated mod with adjustable wattage will handle a standard RTA build. For sub-ohm dual coil builds, you’ll want a mod rated to at least 80W with a battery setup that can handle the current safely. For MTL RTAs running higher resistance coils, even a basic single-battery mod is usually enough. If you’re building at very low resistances, it’s worth understanding Ohm’s Law and checking your mod’s amp limit before firing. Our sub-ohm vaping guide covers the basics of matching your build to your hardware.
