What is sub ohm vaping?

Sub ohm vaping means using a coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohm. Lower resistance means the coil heats up faster and generates more power, which translates to bigger vapour production and more intense flavour. The inhale style is DTL, you draw the vapour straight into your lungs rather than holding it in your mouth first. It’s a fundamentally different experience to mouth-to-lung vaping, and getting that distinction right matters before you spend any money. Best e-liquids for sub ohm vaping

The e-liquid you choose matters as much as the kit itself. Get this wrong and you’ll get harsh hits, burnt coils and disappointing flavour.

The basics:

• 70VG/30PG is ideal for most sub-ohm kits, although some high-powered setups also perform well with 80VG blends
• Nicotine strength should be 3mg or 6mg. Sub ohm kits produce a lot of vapour, so they deliver nicotine very efficiently. Anything above 6mg will be uncomfortably harsh
• Shortfills are the most cost-effective format for sub ohm vapers – you get 50ml or 100ml of nicotine-free liquid and add a nic shot to reach your preferred strength
• Avoid 50:50 liquids entirely. The thinner consistency vaporises too quickly in a sub ohm coil, produces harsh hits and burns coils faster

Can you use nic salts in a sub ohm kit? No. Nic salts are designed for low-power, high-resistance devices. Using them in a sub ohm kit at 40W+ will deliver an uncomfortable amount of nicotine very quickly. Stick to freebase nicotine in 3mg or 6mg.

What does sub ohm vaping actually cost to run?

Nobody covers this, and it’s a genuinely important question before you commit to a setup.

E-liquid use: Sub ohm vaping uses more liquid than MTL. A regular sub ohm vaper typically gets through 5ml to 10ml per day, compared to 2ml to 4ml on a typical MTL or pod kit setup. Over a week that’s roughly 35ml to 70ml. A 100ml shortfill from our range costs around £10 to £15, which works out to roughly £4 to £10 per week depending on how much you vape.

Coil replacement: Sub ohm coils need replacing more frequently than MTL coils, generally every one to two weeks. We ran a 0.2 ohm mesh coil at 60W for just under two weeks before the flavour dropped off and the hits started tasting flat. Sweet e-liquids (anything heavy on caramel, custard or dessert flavours) shorten coil life faster because the sugars caramelise on the coil. A pack of replacement coils typically costs £6 to £12.

So realistically, a sub ohm vaper running a mid-range setup might spend £15 to £25 per week on liquid and coils combined – more if you’re a heavier vaper, less if you’re careful with your wattage and e-liquid choices. Battery safety for sub ohm vaping

Sub ohm kits draw significantly more current than low-power pod devices. Getting battery safety right isn’t optional.

• Always use batteries recommended by the manufacturer. This applies to both internal and external battery kits.
• For external battery mods, use reputable 18650 or 21700 cells from brands with a reliable safety record. Cheap, unbranded batteries are a genuine risk in high-drain applications.
• Never use damaged batteries, including cells with torn wrap, dents or any sign of swelling.
• Never mix unmatched pairs in a dual-battery mod. Use batteries from the same brand and batch, and drain and charge them together.
• Store spare batteries in a proper case, not loose in a bag or pocket.
