Sub-ohm coils are one of the key components you need to chase huge clouds. They turn high VG e-liquid into mass vapour, offering lower resistance. This means that more current flows through the coil, resulting in higher temperatures, more vapour, and often, more intense flavours.
While the resistance of sub-ohm vape coils varies, it’s always lower than 1.0 ohm. You’ll find low resistances such as 0.15 ohm, 0.3 ohm and 0.5 ohm when browsing our DTL coils.
The wattage setting required by sub-ohm coils varies between products. It can range from 30W to 120W or more, although the average coil typically requires between 40W and 70W.
Be sure to check the side of your sub-ohm coils for the recommended wattage range. If you get the wattage wrong, you could experience gurgling or flooding because the liquid won’t be properly vaporised. Precise wattage also helps you avoid burning your cotton.
Since 2017, mesh coils have overtaken traditional wire coils in popularity. Standard coils are made from resistance wire twisted around wicking materials, while mesh low-resistance coils are constructed from a strip of resistance mesh. Mesh coils offer a larger surface area, helping your liquid to heat up faster and produce bigger clouds while using less battery.
These coils have low resistance relative to their mass. While mesh coils have a sub-ohm resistance, some are designed specifically for low-wattage mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping. This means they won’t produce the big clouds and intense flavours compared to DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping.

Signs that you need to replace your coil include a burnt taste, a lack of flavour, and cloud production. If your vapour feels drier than usual, it’s probably a sign that it’s time to replace the resistance coil.
Most sub-ohm coil replacement packs contain three to five coils, although you can find packs containing up to 10 coils.
Sub-ohm coils work best with high VG e-liquids, as they produce larger clouds. Many vapers use a 50:50 VG/PG e-liquid ratio for big flavours and big clouds. If you’d like bolder flavours, use a 70:30 VG to PG ratio. Serious cloud chasers should use 80:20 VG to PG ratios or 100% VG liquid.
You should also choose vape juice with a relatively low nicotine strength (3mg or less), as nicotine reduces flavour and vapour production. The higher the VG, the more battery power you’ll need, and less flavour will be pulled through.
