Which e-liquid works best with MTL coils?

Coil and e-liquid pairing isn’t complicated once you know the basics. MTL coils are designed for thinner e-liquids, specifically 50/50 PG/VG blends and nic salt formulas. The cotton wicking in these coils has tighter tolerances than sub-ohm coils, and thin e-liquid wicks through it efficiently.

High-VG shortfills are a problem. A 70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG blend is too thick for most MTL coils to wick properly at low wattage. The cotton can’t absorb the liquid fast enough, you run it dry and get a burnt hit. It’s one of the most common reasons new vapers end up with a horrible taste and a ruined coil.

Stick to 50/50 liquids or nic salts with your MTL setup and you’ll get clean flavour, consistent wicking and a coil that lasts.

How long do MTL coils last, and what do they cost to run?

A well-primed MTL coil used with the right e-liquid typically lasts one to three weeks. Chain vaping, sweetened e-liquids and skipping the priming step all shorten that lifespan. Vaping a few times a day on plain or lightly sweetened juice? You might comfortably hit three weeks per coil.

Most MTL coils are sold in packs of five. At two weeks per coil, that’s ten weeks of vaping from one pack. Depending on the brand, packs typically range from around £6 to £12. That works out to less than £1.50 per week in most cases.

Compare that to disposable vapes at £4 to £6 each, used every one to two days, and the saving is significant. Running MTL replacement coils is one of the simplest ways to cut the cost of vaping without changing your setup.

Signs your MTL coil needs replacing

Most coils don’t fail dramatically. They fade, and the signs creep up on you. Here’s what to look out for:

• Burnt or muted flavour – the clearest sign the cotton is degraded or gummed up with residue
• Gurgling or crackling that won’t clear – excess liquid pooling around a coil that’s lost its wicking efficiency
• Noticeably reduced vapour – the coil isn’t heating evenly or consistently anymore
• Visible darkening on the coil – heavy colouring or solid gunk on the coil head when you remove it

When any of these appear, replace the coil rather than push through. Vaping on a dead coil burns cotton into your vapour, and that’s not something you want to inhale.
