Sub-Ohm Coils Overview & Specifications

Types of Sub-Ohm Coils Available

Choosing the Right Resistance

This is where most buyers get stuck. You’ll see coils listed at 0.15 ohm, 0.3 ohm, 0.5 ohm and everything in between. The resistance affects your wattage requirement, the temperature of the vape, the throat hit and how hard your battery works. Here’s a straightforward breakdown:

  • 0.15-0.2 ohm coils run best at 60-80W. Open airflow, warm vape, dense clouds. Good for cloud chasers and vapers who want a full-on DTL experience.
  • 0.3-0.4 ohm coils sit in the 40-60W range. Moderate airflow, balanced between cloud output and flavour clarity. This is where most everyday DTL vapers land.
  • 0.5-0.6 ohm coils work well at 25-40W. Restricted DTL draw, cooler vape, more flavour-forward. Lower battery drain and often longer coil life too.

The practical differences matter day to day. Lower-resistance coils at high wattage produce more vapour but eat through both battery and e-liquid faster. If you’re carrying a device to work and don’t want to refill twice a day, a 0.4 ohm coil at 50W is a better choice than a 0.15 ohm running flat out. Throat hit also increases with temperature, so if you find a hot vape uncomfortable, step up in resistance rather than stepping down in wattage on a coil that doesn’t suit your style. More on the technical side in our guides to ohms law and variable wattage vs variable voltage.

How Resistance Affects Battery Life

Resistance doesn’t just change your vape’s temperature and vapour output, it also has a direct impact on how hard your battery works. As a general guide:

  • 0.15 ohm coils draw the most current and place the highest demand on your battery, meaning the shortest runtime between charges.
  • 0.3 ohm coils sit at a balanced middle ground, offering solid vapour and flavour without draining the battery as quickly.
  • 0.6 ohm coils are the most efficient option here, using less power per puff and giving you noticeably longer battery life alongside a cooler, more restricted draw.

If battery life matters more to you than maximum cloud output, choosing a higher-resistance coil is one of the simplest ways to get more use out of a single charge.

Our Sub-Ohm Coil Brands

We stock coils across a range of styles and price points, so here’s a quick guide to which brands are worth your attention and why.

For big clouds

  • BP Mods – solid mesh construction and reliable wicking make these a good pick for cloud-focused builds.
  • Innokin – uses quality cotton wicking materials that handle high-VG liquids well without drying out quickly.
  • Smoant – versatile coils with a wide wattage range, good for vapers who switch between power levels.
  • Vandy Vape – consistently dense vapour output, well suited to open-airflow DTL tanks.
  • Vaperz Cloud – built specifically for high-wattage, high-output vaping. Not subtle, but that’s the point.
  • Vaporesso – competitive pricing with consistent performance, a reliable daily driver option.
  • Wotofo – mesh coils that produce serious cloud volume without sacrificing flavour.

For bold flavour

  • Aspire – the PockeX coils handle hybrid MTL/DTL use well and deliver clean, smooth flavour across a range of resistances.
  • Lost Vape – coils that reproduce flavour profiles accurately, a good choice if you’re vaping complex or fruit-heavy e-liquids.

Advanced technology

  • FreeMax – known for pushing coil innovation, particularly with multi-layer mesh designs that increase surface contact.
  • HorizonTech – practical coil engineering with a focus on consistency and longevity.
  • Uwell – distinctive coil design with a strong reputation for quality control and reliable performance across their tank range.
  • GeekVape – the Z Series coils in particular are worth noting: we’ve run them consistently across 10-14 days at 60-70W before any drop-off in flavour quality.

Versatility and customisation

  • Asmodus – compatible across a range of resistance levels with good build consistency.
  • HellVape – caters to a wide spread of vaping styles, from restricted DTL to full open-airflow cloud chasing.
  • SMOK – broad coil range covering most of their own sub-ohm kits, plus some crossover compatibility with other tanks. The VooPoo PnP range is another strong option if you’re running a PnP-compatible device, as the coils perform consistently across the full PnP ecosystem.

Who Are Sub-Ohm Coils Best For?

What E-Liquid Should You Use?

Sub-ohm coils need a high-VG e-liquid. As a rule, stick to 70% VG as a minimum and ideally 80% VG or above. The thick consistency is what keeps the coil saturated at high temperatures. Run a 50/50 liquid through a sub-ohm coil and the thin PG-heavy mix will vaporise faster than the wick can absorb it, leading to dry hits and a shortened coil life. For most UK vapers, shortfill e-liquids are the practical choice here: they come in 70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG ratios, start at 50ml and work out considerably cheaper per ml than smaller bottles. Browse our high VG e-liquids to find what pairs well with your coil.

One thing worth being direct about: nic salts are not a good fit for sub-ohm tanks. At the wattage levels sub-ohm coils operate at, the nicotine hit from a nic salt liquid becomes uncomfortably harsh. Stick to freebase nicotine at 3mg or 6mg for DTL vaping. See our nic salts vs freebase guide if you want the full comparison, and our breakdown of VG and PG if the ratios are new to you.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Coil

Prime It First

Skipping this step is the single most common reason people get a burnt hit from a brand-new coil, and once a coil is burnt, it’s gone.

Before you fire up a new sub-ohm coil, do this:

  1. Drip e-liquid directly onto the exposed wicking holes and the centre of the coil head until the cotton looks visibly saturated.
  2. Fill your tank and let it sit for at least 5 minutes before vaping.
  3. Start at the bottom of the recommended wattage range for your coil.
  4. Take a few short, gentle puffs to work the wick through without firing, then fire at low wattage.
  5. Step up the wattage gradually over the first 10-15 puffs until you reach your preferred setting.

That five minutes of patience at the start is what separates a coil that lasts two weeks from one that tastes of charcoal on the second puff. Full instructions are in our how to prime a vape coil guide.

Common Mistakes That Kill Coils Early

Most premature coil deaths come down to one of a handful of avoidable errors:

  • Using the wrong e-liquid. A thin 50/50 liquid in a sub-ohm coil won’t saturate the wick properly at high wattage. Use 70% VG minimum.
  • Exceeding the wattage ceiling. Every coil has a maximum wattage printed on the side. Going above it scorches the cotton. Check before you fire.
  • Chain vaping. Taking hit after hit without a pause between puffs stops the wick from re-saturating fully. Give it 20-30 seconds, especially with thicker liquids.
  • Running the tank low. Once the e-liquid level drops below the wicking holes, you’re pulling vapour through dry cotton. Refill before it gets to that point.
  • Skipping the break-in period. Even with a properly primed coil, hammering it at 80W on the first puff risks a burnt hit. Work up to your target wattage.

More detail in our guides to avoiding dry hits and why your vape tastes burnt.

What Are Sub-Ohm Coils?

A sub-ohm coil is any coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohm. Lower resistance means more current flows through the coil, which generates more heat, more vapour and generally a more intense flavour hit. These coils are built for direct-to-lung vaping, where you inhale vapour straight into your lungs rather than holding it in your mouth first. Most sub-ohm coils you’ll find today are mesh coils, which use a strip of metal mesh rather than twisted resistance wire. The larger surface area heats liquid more evenly and faster than a traditional coil. For a fuller breakdown of the style, read our guide to sub-ohm vaping or see mesh coils vs regular coils if you want to know the detail.

If you’re putting together a full DTL setup, browse our sub-ohm tanks for compatible hardware, or see the sub-ohm kits range if you’re starting from scratch. Our guide to sub-ohm vaping covers everything else you need to know before you buy.

Sub-Ohm Coils FAQs

Explore our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What does sub-ohm mean?

Sub-ohm refers to any coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohm. Lower resistance allows more electrical current to flow through the coil, which produces more heat, more vapour and more intense flavour than a standard coil. It’s the foundation of direct-to-lung vaping.

Will sub-ohm coils work with my vape kit?

Not all kits are compatible. Sub-ohm coils require a mod or device that can deliver enough power, typically 25W or above, and a tank designed for DTL vaping. Mouth-to-lung starter kits and pod devices with above-ohm coils won’t work. Check your tank’s compatibility before ordering. Our beginners guide to vape coils explains this in more detail.

What wattage do I need for a sub-ohm coil?

It depends on the resistance. A 0.15 ohm coil typically runs at 60-80W. A 0.3-0.4 ohm coil suits 40-60W. A 0.5-0.6 ohm coil works at 25-40W. Always check the recommended wattage range printed on the coil itself and start at the lower end before working up.

How long do sub-ohm coils last?

Most sub-ohm coils last between one and two weeks with regular use. Coil life depends on how often you vape, the wattage you run, and whether you’re using the right e-liquid. High-VG liquids and a proper break-in period help coils last longer. See our guide on how long vape coils last for more context.

When should I replace my coil?

The clearest signs are a burnt or muted flavour, visible discolouration on the coil head, or a drop in vapour production despite no change to your settings. If your vape is starting to taste off and cleaning the tank doesn’t help, the coil needs changing.

Can I use nic salts with a sub-ohm coil?

We’d steer you away from it. Nic salts at sub-ohm wattages deliver a very harsh throat hit that most vapers find uncomfortable. Freebase nicotine at 3mg or 6mg is the standard choice for DTL vaping at these power levels. If you’re using a lower-wattage restricted DTL coil around 0.5-0.6 ohm, some vapers use a low-strength nic salt, but it’s not the typical use case.
