Geekvape

Geekvape’s Aegis series is built for vapers who are hard on their gear. What to Look for When Buying a Vape Mod

Before you pick a mod, it’s worth understanding a few practical details that will affect your experience every day.

Regulated vs Unregulated

A regulated mod has a chipset that manages power output and includes built-in protections: short-circuit cutoff, low battery warning, overheat protection and firing cutoff. For most vapers, regulated is the right choice.

Mechanical mods have none of that. Power goes straight from the battery to the atomiser, with no electronic management in between. This gives experienced builders maximum control over resistance and output, but it also means there’s nothing to protect you if something goes wrong. Ohm’s law is not optional here – you need to understand coil resistance, battery ampere ratings and how they interact. Battery Configuration

Most regulated mods run on either one or two external cells. Single-battery mods are more compact and suit vapers vaping at moderate wattages. Dual-battery mods offer more capacity and better sustained output at higher wattage levels.

The most common cell sizes are 18650, 20700 and 21700. The 21700 format stores more energy and handles higher drain better than an 18650, which matters if you’re running a 0.15ohm coil at 80W or above. Wattage Range and Vaping Style

Getting the wattage range right before you buy makes a real difference to whether the mod suits how you actually vape:

• 10-20W suits tight MTL vaping with high-resistance coils (1.0ohm and above). This mimics a cigarette-style draw and works well with nic salt e-liquids
• 20-40W covers a relaxed RDL (restricted direct lung) style, good for mid-resistance coils around 0.5-0.8ohm
• 40-80W is the comfortable DTL range for most sub-ohm vapers using coils between 0.2-0.4ohm
• 80W and above is for high-output cloud chasing, typically with coils at 0.15ohm or lower and high-VG shortfill e-liquids

What Else You Need

A mod on its own does nothing. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

• A sub-ohm tank or rebuildable atomiser – browse our best sub-ohm tanks guide for recommendations
• External batteries if the mod doesn’t include them, plus a dedicated battery charger
• E-liquid – high-VG shortfills (typically 70/30 VG/PG or higher) work best at DTL wattages. Learn how to use shortfills if this is new territory
• Replacement coils for your chosen tank

Squonk Mods: A Quick Note

Squonk mods carry a built-in e-liquid bottle, typically holding more juice than a standard tank, which feeds directly into a bottom-fed RDA. You squeeze the bottle to saturate the wick, release it and the excess liquid returns. It’s a clean system for vapers who run rebuildable atomisers and want to stop dripping constantly.
