What Is a Vape Mod?
A vape mod is a case that contains rechargeable batteries and powers the coil in your vape’s atomiser. The vape mod can be a dual or single-battery mod. Vape mods can either be rectangular, tube-shaped, or sleek and rounded. They usually have various features and settings to allow vapers to tailor the vaping experience to each vaper’s preferences.
Power outputs and functionality differ between mods, with maximum power specifications reaching up to 300W. On average, vapers will be very happy with outputs of between 100 and 200W, which is the range where the best vape mods generally fit in.
Vape mods vs vape kits
New vapers are sometimes confused about the difference between a vape mod and a vape kit, so here’s a quick and easy way to tell them apart.
A vape mod is just the part of the e-cigarette that houses the battery and circuitry. Sometimes it will have a screen, buttons, and other features, but the basic idea of a mod is that it is the source of power for your vape. On the other hand, a vape kit includes the mod as well as a vape tank, coils, and mouthpiece.
So, vapers may choose to buy a mod on its own in order to pair it with their chosen tank. Or, they might buy a vape kit to enjoy an all-in-one vape where they don’t have to worry about choosing a different tank. It’s up to the preferences of each individual vaper.
Different Types of Vape Mod
Regulated mods
A regulated mod includes a chip that controls the power drawn from the vape batteries. This means that regulated mods have safety features that create a user-friendly and safe environment for vapers.
Regulated mods are much safer than unregulated vape mods, but vapers must still respect them and follow regular protocols for use. If you follow battery safety methods and understand ohm’s law, you’ll be a safer vaper.
Along with a higher degree of safety, regulated mods allow vapers to alter the voltage and wattage of a mod. Many regulated mods also have a temperature control mode and screens to access settings and options.
Mechanical mods
Mechanical mods are unregulated, so they don’t include a chipset to provide safety or regulate power. When you fire your vape, the atomiser receives the total battery voltage. You should understand the process of vaping before using mechanical mods, as there’s no way to regulate battery use. This can be dangerous for inexperienced vapers.
With unregulated mods, ensure you’re using the correct batteries for the current you draw from the mod. You don’t want to build coils where resistance is too low.
Common Mod Features
Below are some of the most common mod features included in the best vape mods.
- Variable wattage mode: This feature allows you to change the power to your coil, increasing or decreasing vapour and cloud strength.
- Variable voltage mode: Similar to variable wattage, this allows you to change the voltage passing from your batteries .
- Bypass mode: This mode causes regulated box mods to work like unregulated mods. It still keeps the other available safety features.
- Temperature control: The TC mode feature sets a maximum coil temperature for a consistent vape.
- Locking feature: You can lock your mod’s power and adjustment button or every button together.
- Overtime protection: This will stop you from holding down your power button for longer than 10 seconds.
- Smart mode: Smart mode will enable the mod to locate settings automatically.
What to Look For in a Vape Mod
As a new vaper
Vape mod beginners should ignore the higher wattage mods when they start and look for a box mod in the range of 50-90W. Besides that, you should consider your vaping style and what you’ve already been vaping.
If you’re progressing from a vape pen or using mouth-to-lung vape tanks, you will move from an average power of 25-30W, so progress slowly.
As an experienced vaper
You’ve likely been using sub-ohm tanks or are looking to try sub-ohm vaping without building RDAs (rebuildable dripping atomizers). Find yourself a mod vape that handles resistance levels of under one ohm.
If you want to utilise these properly, the best vape mod you can try will typically have a wattage of at least 50W, even reaching the 100W level.
As an advanced vaper
As an experienced vaper, you probably use sub-ohm devices or RBAs (rebuildable atomisers) all the time. If this is the case, you’ll want a device that handles low resistances while pushing out a powerful wattage. You’ll probably already know this, but it’s all about the resistance you build at, so be sure to buy a mod that can deal with low-resistance builds.
Built-in or Replaceable Batteries?
There’s no reason not to buy a mod with a built-in battery, although they’re essentially disposable products. If your battery stops working, you can throw the device away as it’ll be useless. These built-in batteries are lithium-ion, though, so they’ll last a long time before dying. There’s a good chance you’ll have already upgraded before the battery dies.
Mods with replaceable batteries mean you only have to replace the batteries and get yourself a decent charger too. The most common battery size for vaping is the 18650, but more and more of the latest and best vape mods are using 20700 or 21700 battery sizes. It’s not surprising as these sizes last longer before recharge and allow higher wattage use.
It doesn’t make a difference whether you use built-in or replaceable batteries. It’s purely a matter of personal choice.
Conclusion
You’re certainly spoilt for choice if you’re looking for a new vape mod! There’s never been a better time to spread your vaping wings and try new mods in your pursuit of vaping excellence.
